WFP Data Week

Responding to humanitarian emergencies requires accurate and up-to-date information to ensure life-saving decisions are made. Increasingly, humanitarian organisations are able to make use of datasets from social media providers as complimentary sources of information. The availability and low costs of these data streams have the potential to enrich analysis and improve the efficiency of emergency responses.
By partnering together, Facebook and WFP have been exploring ways to leverage FB’s user location data and how this can be used as complimentary data sets to existing WFP streams.
This session will be led by Facebook and will explore the use of FB data sets and the potential applications for emergency response and food security. The Emergency Telecommunications Cluster (ETC), along with VAM and WFP Logistics will also join the session to discuss the opportunities and challenges in their respective areas.
The presentation will show an example from the recent Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and how Facebook data can be used to give a quick overview of Internet connectivity and road access in emergencies.
