GROW: Leveraging Facebook Data – Potential Applications for Emergency Response
Responding to humanitarian emergencies requires accurate and up-to-date information to ensure life-saving decisions are made. Increasingly, humanitarian organisations are able to make use of datasets from social media providers as complimentary sources of information. The availability and low costs of these data streams have the potential to enrich analysis and improve the efficiency of emergency responses.
By partnering together, Facebook and WFP have been exploring ways to leverage FB’s user location data and how this can be used as complimentary data sets to existing WFP streams.
This session will be led by Facebook and will explore the use of FB data sets and the potential applications for emergency response and food security. The Emergency Telecommunications Cluster (ETC), along with VAM and WFP Logistics will also join the session to discuss the opportunities and challenges in their respective areas.
The presentation will show an example from the recent Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and how Facebook data can be used to give a quick overview of Internet connectivity and road access in emergencies.

GROW: How can Home-Grown School Meals improve the local economy? An innovative approach to local food systems.
The Local Economy-Wide Impact Evaluation (LEWIE) shows the impact of food and cash assistance on local economies, including indirect effects to local communities. It showed how beneficial WFP cash-based assistance to refugees is, and will be applied, for the first time, to the Home-Grown School Meals Programme in Kenya. Ed Taylor will present the LEWIE, the data needs, and its relevance to WFP commitment to evidence-based programming. David will further elaborate on how this study improves our understanding of how school feeding impacts the life, income status and food security of vulnerable populations, and how we can use this knowledge in our technical assistance to governments.
